I’m writing this from my hotel room in Daytona, Florida, the day after competing in my last weightlifting event as a 45–49-year-old athlete.
I have to admit, I’ve been completely preoccupied with this event all week and almost forgot my weekly blog post (which I’m taking as a positive because I’ve really been in the moment down here).
But while lying in bed at 4 a.m. staring at the ceiling (as one does in menopause), it hit me. I smiled, initially happy to be so present for a change, and then laughed when I realized it was only Saturday and I still had time to post before the end of the week. So here I am, writing in the middle of the night, listening to the ocean and seagulls outside.
(I’m gonna pause, take a deep breath, and take that in for a moment.)
Yesterday was an amazing experience. I’m welling up as I write this. I finally got to meet (in person) the remote coaching team I’ve been working with this year, and they are exactly the good people I expected from our online interactions. Their athletes are equally amazing and supportive. It has been soul-feeding to be around their passion and energy all weekend.
As for my performance, I did a recap on my video journal, so I’m not writing it all out here. Partly because it’s 4 a.m. and I am going to try to get more sleep, but also because I don’t think I have the emotional energy to unpack it again.
Let’s just say I’m proud of myself and my performance, and it has only made me more motivated to attack this sport as I enter my 50s.
I should add that the title of this post is a bit of a double entendre, not just about making this week’s blog post, but also about making the board at this event. I had to fight hard for my last lift to secure a total and qualify.
And you know what? I’m proud of myself for doing both.
If you’re interested in my entire video journal leading up to the event, you can watch it on YouTube or TikTok.
And on that note, I’m going to update my goals and get back to bed.
