In One Week …

plank ball

I start my new job! I can’t believe it. After a 7-year hiatus from traditional work I have accepted a marketing manager position for a national daycare franchise. Next week at this time I’ll be in an office doing office-y things dressed in office-y clothes. (Speaking of, I am in desperate need of a shopping trip. I haven’t had to wear “real” clothes in a very long time. Everything in my closet is way out of style and at least

Escaping Reality on a Saturday Afternoon

Laser gun battle ground

Needing an escape from the real world, I have decided to take a break and write about my day so far. It all started with a little internal battle. I posted this on Facebook a little while ago… Lying in bed this morning. Pondering a run to the gym so I could take yoga. Should I go? Nah. The bed is nice. Should I go? Ugh. I don’t want to get dressed. Should I go? Gah! It’s cold out there. Should I

A One-Picture Sensational Sunday on Monday Morning

laundry bombs

I kicked this weekend’s ass! Not only did I take yoga both Saturday and Sunday, I snuck in a mile run, took a new-to-me class at the gym (BodyVive), cleaned (most of) the house, hit the grocery store and got all the laundry done with the boys. We even revived an old family tradition: laundry bombs… Although we were a little sad 11-Year-Old is almost too big to do them. He needs much more padding to break his fall now that he

Lentil Soup with Homemade Ham Stock

Lentil Soup with Homemade Ham Stock

This is the post in which I declare my love of soups. I’m sure I’ve made this declaration before but I feel compelled to restate it especially since I’ve been diving deeper into the world of homemade soup and stock. This Christmas for the second year in a row I made my traditional French Onion Soup using homemade beef stock. I would have never thought it was as easy as it was until I tried it — roast bones, simmer, strain.

A First-Place Masters Finish!

16114567_10154212341722876_8453967354171941230_n

Here I am overhead squatting 65 pounds in the final workout of the competition I participated in on Sunday. A friend from my old gym (Jim) competed with me. We were in the male/female masters (40+) scaled division and killed it! Well, the first 2 workouts anyway. The first workout was a power clean ladder. We had to complete at least 1 Power Clean as a team within 45 seconds to progress through the ladder. If we hit all 10 lifts then 5

Chipotle Beef Bean Butternut Casserole

Chipotle Beef Bean Butternut Casserole

It’s the eve of my first masters CrossFit competition.  For those who don’t know, “masters” basically means “old person” division. Now that I’m over 40 I don’t need to compete with all the 20-something athletes. I get to go head-to-head with all 40-year-old athletes!  Sometimes I wish they had a discovered-fitness-later-in-life division for those of us who didn’t start actually moving our bodies or training until we were into our 30s. Anyway, I’m going to do what I always do —

Life Lessons Learned From My Long-Lost Cast-Iron Skillet

cast iron

It’s a snowy Saturday afternoon here in good old Maryland. I started the day with a frigid mile run to the gym so I could take yoga. When class was over I didn’t expect the snow but there it was coming down at a good clip and I had a smile from ear to ear as I ran home in the winter wonderland. We’re a week into the new year and even though I didn’t make any official resolutions there is

A New Year’s Eve Moment of Zen

New Year's Eve 2016

This morning I was awakened by a 5-year-old gently tapping on my pillow. I lifted the blanket and he crawled into bed with me. We cuddled up together, him dozing off on my left and The Husband sound asleep on my right. Of course I was now wide awake. Once my brain is turned on in the morning I usually can’t shut it back off regardless what time it is or when I went to bed, and last night I went to

I’ve Got Nothing

Nothing! Nothing to say. Nothing to share. Nothing. I haven’t even been posting as much to social media. Well, at least it feels that way,  but I just looked and it seems I shared about 5 photos on Instagram since I last blogged but nothing on my Facebook Page. Nothing. I just haven’t felt like it. At first I thought maybe it was a funk. Isn’t it a sign of depression when things you used to find joy in no longer

Roasted Red Pepper and Sweet Potato Soup

Finsihed red pepper and sweet potato soup

Is it possible for someone to feel great and crappy at the same time? Overall I’ve been feeling fantastic. My commitment to food journaling and upping my veggie consumption this past month has me less bloated and more energetic. However, a nasty sinus infection has me feeling like an alien is attempting to burrow out of my sinuses. Even my ears feel congested. My ears. ugh. Anyway, I’m mushing on and in my arsenal to battle winter colds is what Mom
