Who IS Your Audience? And More Importantly, Do You Even Care?

Who IS Your Audience? And Do You Even Care?

I was poking around other blogs today and I started wonder… who are they writing this for?

Some of my posts are definitely geared towards fellow bloggers, like the one I’m writing right now. Really, this is the reason I started RoniNoone.com. I wanted an outlet to chat about tech and blogging stuff that doesn’t belong on my other blogs. Generally, when I’m blogging on Roni’s Weigh or GreenLiteBites I’m not specifically talking to other bloggers. I’m talking to everyone or anyone that wants to read and is interested in what I have to say, Blogger or not.

I bring this question up out of curiosity as I wonder if other bloggers even think about this when they blog. Did their blogs start out by talking to everyone but slowly evolved to discussing blogging topics. Do we isolate those that don’t blog when and if this happens? Does our audience even care?

Looking at Darrn Rowse, one of the most successful bloggers I know, his blog, ProBlogger.net is, of course, geared towards fellow bloggers. However, his other successful blog, Digital Photography is written for fellow photo nuts. Whether or not they are bloggers, doesn’t really matter.

I don’t think there is a right or wrong way to blog. I’m just curious if you chose your audience before hand or if this is something you even think about. That is… IF you have a blog. ;)

I have been asking the same question from myself... "who am I blogging for?" I have days that I feel like no one cares about what I have to say about food or excercise and then I meet a person who says.... "hey I made your x or y recipe and it turned out great" and I realize thats who I write for.... and I do it for me...

I started out blogging for others losing weight. Now I blog for anyone who just wants to go through the ups and downs of life. I don't know a ton about blogging so I try to steer clear of things specifically to bloggers. I read other places like ProBlogger for that ;-)

I follow your other two blogs and somehow missed this one! You must be one busy lady!

Our blog was born out of necessity while on mission in Africa- our audience was our supporters. Since we've returned home it's turned into more of a fun "Pointless" thing for my friends, but still supporters follow, and humanitarian workers and Africans. Having a mixed audience is the biggest struggle I have (and by "audience" I mean a tiny audience where you can hear a pin drop).

I think about it a lot though!

As an English teacher, I'm always telling my students that with everything we write- there is ALWAYS an audience.. even if it's us a few years down the road, or our idea of our grandchildren reading... We never write for nothing.

I struggled with "audience" at the beginning and that's why I ended up with so many blogs... a gardening/backyard blog, my company blog, women & careers blog, and now (thanks to you!) a healthy diet blog.

Now I struggle with staying organized and finding time! LOL!

I blog for myself, family and friends. I love when I see people later and they are excited they were mentioned in a post.

My blog really is for people who want to make healthy meals, but need some new food ideas. I don't talk much about blogging at all, and I don't think that many bloggers are in my (very small) audience. But I do know that I have a few friends/readers who love the recipes they see, but say they don't actually try them - and I wonder how my blog can help them push through the obstacles to preparing good food. That's one of my goals.

I blog for whoever wants to read, but more so for myself. It's a record for me to look back on and a great outlet to get out my thoughts.

I do consider that my grandma reads my blog when sharing what I consider "secrets" but I don't write it for her. :)

Probably because I'm a writer professionally, i do think about my audience pretty often. My audience is women, not young, not old. Maybe 25-50. I write for them, because that's who I feel I can relate to. These are women struggling with weight, with issues of love, sex, and marriage/divorce. Those are all things I go through myself, so that's who I write for and that seems to be exactly the population of my readership.

My blog started out, though, as more of a food blog. Overtime, I realized that wasn't really me. The moment I began to write like "me," my readership grew and it's been growing ever since. It's that whole "be true to yourself" thing. It really works. ;)

Its funny you ask because I started my blog as private but always wrote as if someone was reading it. Since I always posted as if someone was reading it, the transition from private to public was not hard at all!
