The Social Media Cold Shoulder

I’ve been ignored on twitter!

There. I said it. I know I’m not the only one. Come on… admit it. You’ve been ignored as well.

Why am I confessing? Well, I think many people assume that some bloggers don’t feel the sting of rejection. That they are just immediately responded to and acknowledged.

I don’t buy it. Everyone gets ignored now and again.

If a tweet of mine doesn’t get responded to I just assume no one saw it or *gasp* no one CARED.

The horror!

But truth be told…. many don’t care.

I’m ok with that.  Are you?

Side note: I recently I posted a fabulous guest post on the FitBloggin’ blog by Katy Widrick. I asked Katy to write the post after hearing people complain that they didn’t feel welcomed in the world of blogging.

what's hard about twitter for me is that it seems to have any sort of real interaction you need to be logged in for a while... i'm no good at that, i log in and log out of any of the social media websites, so i don't really get to enjoy twitter the way it's intended, i think. i try to reply to a couple tweets and tweet once or twice myself but then, like now, i have a couple dogs and a human demanding my attention and i have to go... sigh!

Guess I'm guilty of not replying to the @ replies I get from others (not that I get very many.) ... Hmm. I'll have to work on that.

I guess what I mean is I just figure no one cares as much about what I have to say as I do.

My tweets are routinely ignored. I just figure no one cares. Oh well.

Ahh social media- one more way to feel left out! You're right- everybody gets ignored sometimes. It just reminds me to make sure I'm not ignoring other people ;)

Thank you for talking about this, Roni! I have to say I'm surprised that even a successful blogger like yourself has experienced this! I thought it was just me! ;)
It's a struggle on both sides of the coin. As a blogger, I know what it's like to be overwhelmed with comments, tweets, and emails. You want to get back to every single one but just can't.
But on the other side, you spend your time and invest yourself to interact within a community, and sometimes don't feel heard or appreciated. I try not to take it personally and remember that that person/blogger is just as busy (if not much busier) than me.
Again, thanks!

FB is just so much slower and I like that... I can comment on a 1-day old post and still the conversation keeps going. But I dont keep signed on tweeter all day long and my TL moves so fast, yeah I have this feeling of "not getting this tweeter thing"

Yeah.. that get's me too. I'll send a very heartfelt response only to never hear from the person again. :(

this is a topic that makes my head hurt! i can't keep up with twitter :) it's just impossible sometimes! email is even worse. i try to answer as many emails as i can but with work and the occasional shower and now and then actually creating a new blog post, it's impossible. there's also a flipside too - when you respond to someone's question by email or twitter and they don't acknowledge it! that crushes me every time :)

Yes, I've definitely felt that way lately and have just backed off Twitter altogether. I still tweet w/ some of my pals once in a while but it's really not the way it used to be. It's tough when you say good morning and respond to other people's tweets, RT their blog posts or other links and no one says boo to you for an hour. Fortunately, I have a pretty interesting 'real life' so it's not the end of the world.

Mandy - I think I've been ignoring you.. sorry. :)

Only kidding.. but you are right.. never thought of the private thing. That has happen to me before where someone wanted me to meet someone else but I couldn't because they have their tweet protected.

I was just thinking about this today when I realized I'd been blocked by someone, and they blocked me elsewhere. It was an acquaintance, so I wasn't terribly upset, but it was a strange feeling. Did I say something wrong?

I think part of the "I'm being ignored" feeling may come from the many ways we can connect. As one commenter said, they prefer FB to replying on Twitter. Sometimes I see people's updates in so many places I never know where/how to respond, especially if it's a sad one. Am I giving you more sympathy or being a better friend if I tell you I'm sorry 3 times instead of 1? I would argue not, but some may feel differently.

And I think since I have my Twitter set to private, some people I @ reply to can't see my responses if they don't also follow me. Like you. :) So maybe you're ignoring me too?! Hehe.

I have to admit that I don't really get twitter. I set up an account as my real self ages ago and never tweeted. Then I set up a second one, anonymous, thinking that would give me a place to vent. Never tweeted. Lastly I set on up for my blog persona. It seemed the thing to do. But days go by and I forget to even look at twitter! I don't understand the etiquette or protocol or abbreviations or allure. Facebook I love! But the real me, not the blogger me.

Amy - I TOTALLY agree... I've had many @ replies that have gone ignored. Which is why I always reply. At least I try to.

Great point!

I realize that not everyone cares when someone poses a question on twitter or even a blog post, but what stings is when you directly reply to someone and it goes unnoticed. The people I follow/read seems to be a group of people everyone follows and reads. Although this has actually been a huge discussion among this group and how no one tries to ignore anyone- it still happens and it still stings. I'm not gonna lie, sometimes I just give up trying to reach out to people, because it usually goes unnoticed. I realize you can't follow/read everyone, but if you notice something- try to respond and be polite.

LMAO I do reply on your FB but on tweeter... its a lot faster and I think you're asking other bloggers or my answer is not interesting enough or maybe you get 200 tweets back and mine would get lost or something like that

Yes! I have felt that way- but I also know I'm guilty of it! Sometimes, it isn't even that I "don't care" so much as it is a "only glancing plan to comment later" but then "later" becomes a memory and I forget to comment (which is why when I saw this I am commenting NOW).

Being a brand!new!blogger! myself - I had to suck it up early on that I won't instantly be a superstar blogger (and really, I may never be!) and that's ok! It's meant to be a journal- a jigsaw puzzle of my journey- for me. Anything anyone else gains or draws from it is gravy.

For the most part I'm over Twitter. It's great and all but it's a lot of shameless self promotion and mundane tweets. I love getting to talk with other bloggers about things that are happening, but it's also impossible to keep up with everyone. Someone always gets ignored. I get ignored. It's tough if you don't have a thick skin. The truth is that no one cares about your stuff as much as you do. Learning that is a tough but valuable lesson.
